Program Notes:

Downcycling is the recycling one product into a reduced product. Recycling used printer paper to make newspaper would be an example of this. The downcycled product still has function, but its new lifespan has been diminished.

Originally Scott Herring’s plan was to record my piece …folded…, but a mutual friend of ours beat him to the punch. In an effort to give Scott something like …folded…, I came up with Downcycle. I tried to represent the character of …folded… while at the same time crafting something that would have it’s own identity. In Downcycle, the original theme of …folded… has been used again in a highly condensed form, thereby reducing the possibilities for its future use.

Downcycle was premiered by Scott Herring with the University of South Carolina Percussion Ensemble in the Spring of 2015 and can be heard on Scott’s CD Carbon Paper and Nitrogen Ink.
