As students, we are ideally surrounded by teachers who are there to guide us towards success in a particular field of study. If we are lucky, one or two of those teachers go beyond the all-important curricular boundaries and help shape not just who we are as professionals, but who we are as people. During my time as a student at Virginia Tech (1995 – 2000), I was fortunate to have not just one, but five.
This piece consists of small portraits of those five mentors, written with gratitude for all they have given me…
Vignettes was commissioned and premiered by the Virginia Tech Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Annie Stevens and Hannah Weaver in the Spring of 2018.
